The Final FRCA Structured Oral Examination (SOE) is a high-stakes, viva-style assessment conducted by the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) in the UK. It serves as the final component of the Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA), and is taken after completion of the Written Final FRCA.
🧠 Exam Format:
Delivered in person at the College, the Final SOE consists of two distinct oral components:
Split into Part A and Part B, each lasting 26 minutes
Each part includes two short clinical cases, each linked with a clinical science question
Clinical science topics may be asked before or after the clinical case
Total of four short cases and two basic science questions
Begins with a 10-minute preparation period to review clinical material
Followed by:
A 13-minute two-section long clinical case
Then two independent short clinical cases over another 13 minutes
Total exam time: 36 minutes
The exam broadly assesses knowledge and reasoning aligned with the Intermediate Level Training Curriculum, with topics drawn from:
General Duties (minimum two topics)
Six Essential Units (minimum four topics)
Optional Units (up to one topic)
📝 Scoring System:
Each SOE contains 12 questions in total
Each question is marked 0 (fail), 1 (borderline), or 2 (pass) by both examiners
Total maximum score: 48 points
The pass mark is set using standardized criteria approved by the GMC
✅ Passing the Final SOE requires:
Strong clinical knowledge across a broad scope of anaesthesia
The ability to demonstrate clear and structured thinking under pressure
Confident communication and decision-making in complex scenarios
